LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling on Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo. The Court overruled Chevron deference, which required courts to defer to interpretations of laws made by those government agencies charged with enforcing them.

Statement from Mike Young, Senior Political & Organizing Director, California Environmental Voters:

“By reversing four decades of precedent, the Supreme Court just crippled the ability of government agencies to effectively interpret and enforce laws that protect communities from corporate polluters. This ruling is a devastating threat to the advancement of climate justice, environmental protection, and democracy in our country.

Year after year, the Court has stripped the EPA’s ability to do its job during the height of the climate crisis, and a Court that continues to endanger low-income and communities of color is not representative of the people.

We cannot stand by while our Court is bought off to give corporate polluters a greenlight to delay our ability to address the climate crisis. We need all of Congress to join us in the fight to rebalance the Supreme Court and institute a code of ethics.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
