ENVIROVOTERS STATEMENT ON GOVERNOR’S CLIMATE CHANGE REMARKS
Sacramento, CA – Today, the California Environmental Voters released the following statement regarding the Governor’s remarks this week on the impact of climate change on California.
Statement from Mary Creasman, CEO, California Environmental Voters:
“We appreciate the Governor calling attention to the terrible impacts of the climate crisis on our state. But with families and communities wrecked and in fear of the climate impacts that are here now, it’s important to back up those comments with action.
Scientists have been warning us about what we are experiencing now for decades, and California has largely failed to make the changes needed to prepare for us for this moment. And just a few weeks ago, the Legislature ended yet another year of policy making without passing bold laws to prepare for and prevent what’s happening. In reality, the Governor has amped up fossil fuel usage through executive orders the past month, which we already know exacerbates our climate crisis.
Here are just a few examples
- August 17th Governor Newsom Signs Executive Order to Free Up Additional Energy Capacity Amid West Coast Heat Wave
- Sept 3rd Governor Newsom Signs Emergency Proclamation to Free Up Additional Energy Capacity Amid Heat Wave
- Sept 6th Following Wildfire Caused Power System Disruptions & Near Record Energy Demand, California Takes Action to Conserve Energy
We aren’t going to get out of this by doing the same things that got us into this mess.
We’re in the dark about how the Governor is prioritizing climate change solutions, and we can’t wait any longer. What’s most heartbreaking is the pain that families are feeling across the state as they battle fires, toxic air quality, extreme heat, rolling black outs, amid a respiratory pandemic – all of which is preventable. We know how to stop these worsening climate impacts and how to become more resilient to our changing climate, but the Governor and the State Legislature are not leading the way.”
