ENVIROVOTERS STATEMENT ON 2020 ELECTION OUTCOMES
Oakland, CA – Today, the California League of Conservation Voters released the following statement on the current election results.
Statement from Mary Creasman, CEO, California League of Conservation Voters:
“This morning I’m reminding myself that democracy takes place 365 days a year and our work isn’t over in one night. Now is the time to #CountEveryVote. Waiting through this process is hard – but it’s critical to our democracy. People stood in line for hours to vote and their voices need to be heard.
The truth is, we knew that we would need to be patient and take the time to count every vote. We knew that the electoral college would be our biggest obstacle to electoral progress, and that remained true. We also knew that change happens from the bottom up and that has been further proven as well. While there’s a long way to go, there’s a real path nationally for a Biden presidency in the next couple days. A record, historic number of Americans voted, in the midst of a pandemic. Vice President Biden will win the popular vote and get millions more votes than Trump.
Through all of this, it’s more clear than ever that the electoral college and Senate malapportionment are structures built to give more power to the votes of white people across our country. These structures are working as designed. Democracy and justice require we take on this fight.
Closer to home, there are some powerful wins projected in California. EnviroVoters’ PAC entities spent over half a million dollars this cycle and Big Oil has continued it’s losing streak this year in critical races across the state. EnviroVoters and our partners are projecting key wins in the state legislature.
For today, our collective job is to stay patient and engaged. Let’s commit to this process and see it through so that every vote is counted.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS
California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
